The Nobel Peace Prize 2016 was awarded to Juan Manuel Santos
“for his resolute efforts to bring the country’s more than 50-year-long civil war to an end”.Juan Manuel Santos is the current President of Colombia. In 1991, he was appointed by President César Gaviria Trujillo as Colombia’s first Minister of Foreign Trade. In 2000, he was appointed by President Andrés Pastrana Arango as the 64th Minister of Finance and Public Credit.
In 2005, he co-founded and led the Social Party of National Unity (Party of the U), a liberal-conservative party coalition. In 2006, after Uribe was re-elected, and the Party of the U won a majority of seats in both chambers of Congress, Santos was appointed Minister of National Defence.
Juan Manuel Santos became President of Colombia on the 7th of August 2010, and is still president after winning the June 15 run off election in Colombia.
On October 7, 2016, it was announced that Santos will receive the Nobel Peace Prize for negotiating a peace treaty with the guerillas in Colombia
